The voltage of our AC power sometimes fluctuates higher or lower than the nominal value due to various reasons such as;

A the voltage is higher during night time when the power consumption in the neighbouring industrial area has reduced
B the voltage is lower during night time when the power consumption in the neighbouring residential area has increased
C the voltage drops across long distance cable from the power source

the capacity of utility power is inadequate for the power power demands by consumers

These undesired variatio=n in voltages can result in malfunction or even breakdown of home electrical appliances and industrial equipment and machinery.
